Mount Royal is one of the best communities with its abundance of green parks, beautiful stately homes and some of the most inspiring people in the world. It is my privilege to work with a passionate, devoted group of “Mount Royalists” who are committed to improving our community and the quality of life we all enjoy. These volunteers invest countless hours and I thank each one most sincerely for their efforts. In a city where the unemployment rate is at an all time low, we have a full slate of dedicated individuals! Mount Royal houses some of Calgary’s oldest residences some of which are designated as historical homes. Before you invest in real estate in Mount Royal check the caveats that are attached to the property, some are quite amusing but still apply today. You may be restricted to having to build a homestead of no less than $1000 or you may be restricted from raising chickens in your front yard. Michael Evans is our very knowledgeable Development Director who can guide you through your building or renovation application process. Michael brings 5 years’ experience to this committee in addition to his professional expertise in real estate development. Did you know that we are the only community association that owns its own building? Ours is that beautiful bungalow at 2325 10th Street SW with the river rock anchoring the base. We enjoy two tennis courts, a basketball area and in the winter we offer an ice surface for skating and shinny. Dagmar Jamieson has done an excellent job in maintaining the property as Facilities Director. The next time you have an event to host, consider renting the community club. The interior has recently been renovated (we got bit by that bug too!). We offer a fully equipped kitchen, new hardwood flooring, beautiful area carpets, new leather furniture and a new gas fireplace make the interior ideal for a small meeting or a large family reunion gathering. We are in an electronic era and the MRCA is stepping up. This November at the AGM , the mandate from the membership was clear and we are moving to meet those demands. We are improving on the website and adding membership payment ability by internet. You can still pay by cheque… just detach the form from the back page of the newsletter and send it all to membership at Mount Royal Station, 2317 10th Street SW, Calgary, T2T 3G7. A membership drive is in the works for May. By phone or door-to-door, canvassers are needed. Please consider volunteering for your block. Email We are also moving toward an electronic newsletter. This will be phased in gradually to accommodate those without computers or who are otherwise computer challenged, will be happy to accept your advertisements. The community association is in a strong financial position. Kuno Ryckborst, in his capacity as Treasurer the last couple of years has used his skill as a bank executive to achieve this goal. Kuno is now our Vice President and has passed the torch to Charlene Anderson. You may remember Charlene is a past Board Executive. She tried to stay away but the magnetic pull was overpowering and she is back, thankfully as our Treasurer. Charlene’s legal expertise is priceless although I have no intention of using her professional services! Bob Weaver is the Traffic Director. The calming measures are in the hands of the landscaping committee and the feedback we have received attached to the membership payments to date have only been positive. Are you new to the neighbourhood? Come out to a Pub Night in March, a Family BBQ in June or the Progressive Dinner in the Fall (to name a few). There is fun for everyone. Jane Perry is the quintessential Events Coordinator Director. Come and see how she transforms the hall into a Hawaiian haven or an Irish pub even Saint Paddy would be green with envy! Watch for a new Children’s Program in the summer. We are looking for part-time and full time students to assist the coordinators of this project. Please contact Torril Myers-Dickson at and express your interest. Thanks to Gerry Erlam who led our Executive this past year. Most comfortable at 30,000 feet as the captain of a Boeing 737, Gerry has been instrumental in guiding the community through turbulence these last couple of years. Finally, let me thank every one of you. I came to Calgary almost 8 years ago and I have received a warm welcome from everyone. I am a Winnipeg prairie girl who has sure enjoys a good Chinook in the middle of winter! My interest is in improving the community both in a volunteer capacity and in my work as a Realtor. I have learned about the history of this fascinating community in my research through the real estate archives and in listening to the wisdom of our long-time residents. As the longest serving member on the current Executive (but not the oldest), I am privileged to be elected as your President. Please contact me with your community interests, suggestions or volunteer commitments. Can hardly wait to hear from you! Sincerely, Marla Klassen |
