Your President's Message -- Welocme to new neighbours! March 12, 2010

I would like to thank the outgoing directors of the Mount Royal Community Association for their dedication to the community. Glenda Campbell, Charlene Anderson, Dagmar Jamieson, Kuno Ryckborst, Barb McNamara, Micheal Evans, and Dave Winter shared their time and expertise to make Mount Royal a better place. Over the past year, in conjunction with our 75th Anniversary residents shared 75 reasons to love Mount Royal. Maybe we can add one for our 76th birthday: neighbours who are willing to volunteer time and energy to keep Mount Royal Station and MRCA viable.

We are very fortunate to have a number of returning directors: Last year, Jane Perry stepped up to take on President and she remains active this year as Past President and Tennis coordinator. Thank you also to Denise Ross, Marsha Hales, Mary Lou McCormick, Tina Dargan, and Charlene Prickett who have agreed to support MRCA for another term.

As I continue to add names, it is clear that it takes many volunteers to facilitate the operations of our community association! Please welcome our new directors: Debra Law - Vice President, Laura Brown - Treasurer, Nancy Calvin - Secretary, Bob Weaver - Traffic, Peter Haley - Development, Candice Selby -Co-Newsletter, and Elisa Iozzo - Co-Community Events.

Upper Mount Royal is the focus area in 2010 for the Calgary Heritage Authority. Historically significant properties will be identified and researched. Information can be found on the website www.calgary.ca/heritage.

The City of Calgary Fire Department has determined that their number one priority is to build a new No. 5 Fire Station in South Calgary. Their plans call for a three bay station and the addition of AHS ambulance. The new structure is needed meet service demands created by increasing population density, changing demographics, and current response-time and deployment standards. As the planning process proceeds and more information is available. Any questions or concerns can be addressed to Greg Wilkes, Deputy Chief, Logistics and Infrastructure (403) 287-4226 or greg.wilkes@calgary.ca. Alderman Jon Mar welcomes comments or concerns: (403) 268-2430

Mount Royal Station is being upgraded with new locks and security measures. A hot water system to facilitate rink flooding will be installed this spring. We have a terrific facility with two top notch tennis courts. Join MRCA for the benefits.

We look forward to seeing you at the June 12th Family BBQ! Fun for all.

Jane Keyser

Annual General Meeting November 18, 2009

I have an important invitation to extend to each and everyone of you. This invitation may not appear to rival the Progressive Dinner, but in my view it is just as important. So, please, mark your calendars for Wednesday, the 18th of November, and come out to the clubhouse for the Annual General Meeting of the Mount Royal Community Association. The meeting will be starting at 7:00 and going until around 9:00, at which time we'll be pouring wine, passing the cheese and crackers, and toasting yet another good year for the MRCA. It has been a good year and we want to tell you all about it. We want to answer questions, and we want to hear your suggestions for how we can best spend our Casino revenues. If you have suggestions for community activities you would like to see happen, tell us. If we did something you didn't like, come on out and let us know.( Although, we will likely have a really good explanation!) We want you to join in these dialogues that keep our community association thriving. And we really want you to participate, if at all possible, by volunteering. How can you help, you ask yourself? Well, as fortunate as we are to have some Board members staying on for the next year, we are still looking for a few good people to help out. We need help with our newsletter, we are short one Vice-President, and the Community Safety position is wide open for someone who wants to help maintain Mount Royal as one of the safest places on earth. If you would like to learn more about these positions and the work that is involved, please let me know by going to our website and sending me a message. I would love to hear from you.

I hope you'll be there on the 18th of November. Be there to give a round of applause to all the volunteers who have been working very hard in your community. Be there to vote in the next Board so more good work can continue. And last, but not least, be there to raise a glass of wine with your neighbors and join in a toast to this amazing neighborhood in its official 75th year!

I miss a lot of details, but not this one. When you come to the AGM, please bring your chequebook. If your membership was not renewed this year, you won't get to vote ( or complain ), unless you have a current membership. Thanks.

After voting in the new Board of Directors, we'll have time for discussions on areas such as the graffiti removal test, the tennis courts, the absence of landscaping on the Premier Way traffic circles, and we may have a question and answer period with our Community Liason Officer on safety issues in the neighborhood.

Cheers Jane Perry

Tennis Lesson Update

Posted on: 23 Jun 2009

We are sorry to advise you that, despite the ad for tennis lessons in our recent newsletter, private or group tennis instructions can no longer be allowed on our courts. We have recently been advised by the Federation of Calgary Communities that allowing a private tennis coach to use the courts for his own teaching business is against our lease with the City of Calgary.

The date for all lessons to cease is the 30th of June 2009. We apologize for any inconvenience. Should you like to have access to the courts for regular play, please call either Jane at 244-4188 or Lorna at 870-2999. Court keys will be made available to members for a 10.00 non-refundable key fee. One key per family will be issued. MRCA memberships should please be current through to the end of September 2009 prior to receiving a key.

Thank you, Jane Perry
